Curriculum Vitae: Margaret Sutherland

Sutherland150x237Margaret Sutherland lectures at the University of Glasgow in additional support needs. She is the Director of the Scottish Network for Able Pupils and Deputy Director of the Centre for Research and Development in Adult and Lifelong Learning, University of Glasgow. She has 29 years teaching experience in mainstream primary schools, behaviour support and latterly in higher education. She has written articles in the field of gifted and talented education and is author of Gifted and Talented in the Early Years: A practical guide for 3-5 year olds and Developing the Gifted and Talented Young Learner. She is on the editorial board of the Korean Educational Development Institute Journal of Educational Policy. She regularly gives keynote addresses at conferences and has led courses, workshops and seminars across the UK, particularly relating to early years. She has also been invited to work with staff and students in Tanzania, Malawi and Korea. She chaired a workshop at the Consultative conference on effective provision for gifted and talented children in the early years: The National Strategies, Department for Children, Schools and Families, England. She was consultant to Cumbria Education Council for their Early Years County Policy and Guidance for Gifted and Talented Children and to Renfrewshire Education Authority on a policy for highly able pupils. She developed non-statutory guidance for the education of highly able pupils in Scottish schools and nurseries. She presented at the Hungarian EU Presidential conference on Talent Support and First European Talent Day in 2011. She is a member of The Tower Group, an independent, worldwide think tank of gifted and talented experts.
